Stewart’s professional journey began unconventionally as a stockbroker on Wall Street in the late 1960s, where she developed financial expertise before shifting to entrepreneurship. After marrying Andrew Stewart in 1961, she founded a catering business from her basement in the 1970s, building a reputation for creative, elegant presentation that became the foundation for her future ventures. Stewart is the second of six children in her family, born Martha Kostyra in New Jersey. The couple later divorced in 1990.

Her catering success provided the springboard for Stewart’s media empire, beginning with numerous bestselling books on cooking, entertaining, and decorating. The company went public in 1999, reaching a peak valuation of $2 billion through diversification into home furnishings, housewares, and e-commerce platforms. Stewart pioneered the modern lifestyle brand business model, establishing new standards for home entertainment and DIY media content.

However, Stewart faced significant legal challenges when she sold 4,000 ImClone Systems shares in December 2001, triggering an insider trading investigation. Convicted in 2004 for obstruction of justice and lying to investigators, she served five months in federal prison and five months under home detention, stepping down as CEO while maintaining editorial roles.

Following her release, Stewart orchestrated a remarkable comeback, rejoining the company board in 2011 after her SEC ban ended. She continued hosting various television programs, including “Martha,” “Martha Bakes,” and the unexpected hit “Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Party Challenge” with Snoop Dogg. In a stunning career milestone, she became the oldest model to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue at age 81 in May 2023.

Her business assets were sold to Sequential Brands for approximately $350 million in 2015, later acquired by Marquee Brands for $175 million in 2019, while Stewart maintained her influential presence in lifestyle media and entertainment.
